I’m not certain that’s the way I would go to increase the U.S. population, Sgt (Join to see).

Sgt (Join to see) - But those housing, education, and income issues have been around for a long time too.

LTC Kevin B., you may recall the day or so of 'buzz' on the news stations last summer about the in-depth poll* that Pew Research conducted* on U.S. adults who didn't have kids and the reasons why.

For those under 50 without kids, while finances are a factor, it's not the primary one (it's #4). The most often cited reason is, "I just don't want to".

COL Randall C. - But "just don't want to" is rather vague. The article did say:

"Majorities in both groups say not having kids has made it easier for them to afford the things they want, have time for hobbies and interests, and save for the future. In the younger group, about six-in-ten also say not having kids has made it easier for them to be successful in their job or career and to have an active social life."

Just about everything listed in that quote is a finance-related reason. Affording stuff, being able to pursue hobbies, having money to save, and having an active social life all involving financial reasons, and even "easier for them to be successful in their job" has financial implications.

LTC Kevin B. - Yes, financial consideration is a frequent contributing factor, it just isn't the predominant factor. The most cited predominant factor is a lack of desire.

Looking beyond the major reason (topline results), two things stand out:
● 79% listed a lack of desire to have children as a major or minor reason to have children
● More people said the affordability of a child wasn't a reason (40%) rather than being a major (36%) or minor (24%) reason.

I have seen and tried to converse with some of the .1's but it's about impossible to make them understand.
