Elizabeth Rosenberg informed The News-Press readers recently that, “All active duty personnel and their families get free health care from the VA” (Dec. 27 Tricare increases inevitable). Nothing could be further from the truth.
The VA is run by the Veterans Administration and its programs offer direct medical care (rather than health insurance) to veterans. While VA beneficiaries have traditionally been service-disabled veterans, any veteran may receive health care at the VA’s facilities (no need to mention how poorly the VA is staffed and “led”). The VA is not funded by Department of Defense.

I am a retired Army Captain. I am on Medicare and tricare for life. Yes, I can be seen at a VA facility, but, it would cost me more money than going to a local doctor.
My retirement letter says I served 39 years and 2 days. I don't count the time on the in the IRR myself, but my retirement letter did.
Note: I do not have any disability that would make things better.
