One of the people you can thank for copyright law is my family ancestor Noah Webster. He actively lobbied for the original copyright law as well as the Copyright Act of 1831, which extended the initial copyright period. He was more than just America's greatest lexicographer. He was also a Founding Father who helped define American culture. In 1783, he published the first edition of his legendary spelling book, which would teach five generations of Americans how to read. Which later became the first dictionary. I am also related to Ephraim Webster who is well known in upper state New York.

An authors work is copyrighted up to 75 years beyond their death.

He was an education reformer, political activist, author of textbooks, pioneer in epidemiology, and a newspaper editor. Noah Webster accomplished many things in his life. Not only did he fight for an American language, he also fought for copyright laws, a strong federal government, universal education, and the abolition of slavery.

Google has it wrong regarding the relationship between Noah and the great Senator Daniel Webster. They were related. They are part of the Webster lineage which dates all the way back to the mid 14th century in England. My ancestor John Webster served with King Edward III of England during the time of the black plague. He served during the 100 years war, and for his service was awarded land by the king. Contrary to popular belief the name Webster does not mean weaver of wool. They were leather workers.

Also any misconceptions regarding Daniel Webster as a traitor can be cleared by knowing the truth in history. People often form opinions basedon what they see or hear. Today's America is now exception. There was a play called "The Devil and Daniel Webster", which was a short story by Stephen Benet that caused many to think ill thoughts of one of - if not the greatest senator in the history of our nation.
