Body Cameras are not the end all be all for preventing police shootings.
I am a police officer in a major police department and we are field testing different cameras now... all of our squad cars have cameras in them now.
There are more issues to consider other then the cost of the cameras. Policy's on when officers have to record or don't have to.... is it appropriate to record an interview with a child rape victim? Remember everything is open to open record requests. .. Or how about you as a private citizen get into an argument with your significant other and a neighbor calls the police, no violence just an argument, do you want your personal conversation with the officer recorded and subject to open records? What about the cost for the data storage?
People need to stop being asses and comply with the officers instructions. If you disagree with the way it is handled then complain or if you are arrested then take it up with the judge.
My two cents anyways.

MAJ (Join to see) Major; To quote the people who favour granting the police/government an almost unfettered right to search persons, places, and possessions "I don't see what your problem is. After all, if you aren't doing anything wrong then you don't have anything to worry about.".
Given the way society appears to be going, "Privacy" looks like being a government monopoly and "The People" will only get it if "The Gummint" feels like letting them have some on loan.

The problem is that you aren't the one who gets to decide if what you're doing is 'wrong'...

As a law enforcement professional in the Army, IMHO we as a nation are getting on a slippery slope when it comes to civil liberties and who decides gets those same civil liberties. If I am doing nothing wrong but it is decided that me being white is a crime or I am suspected of doing something wrong even though I am not, it is an infringement on my freedom of movement. I get it that civilian police get a bad rap, but I am not doing anything wrong, I should not have to explain myself to someone, regardless if they are a "enforcing the law"..... The other shoe is dropping.

I say film everything and maybe when people get tired of that and realize the proof is on the LE officer, they will be less likely to accuse the police of wrong doing. Having worked child abuse cases and dealt with forensics, please do tape those interviews. It can show if the child changes story and with who and what circumstance. Record it all...I am tired of how our law enforcement are being treated. Not all LE officers are perfect but even the bad ones are not as bad as media and movies present.

Think it needs to be clear if you attack a police officer there is a good chance you are going to end up dead. Beat up an officer and go for his gun you get shot till you stop moving. I have had meet ups with officers many times in my life, in the US and overseas, and have never had an issue. Treat the officer with respect and do exactly as they say will keep you from getting into trouble. Think parents need to teach their kids respecting the police would do far more good than body cams.

perhaps in conjunction with though, Sir. Yes parents need to instill that respect in their children but we also need to have ways of holding public officials and agents of the state accountable. If the solution is body cams (I think that remains to be seen) so be it.

CPT Faried. I do think the officers need to be accountable as well but have you thought why no grand jury has sent them to trial. It is because in all of the cases that have come up during the past few years have been justified. Look at Michael Brown that started all of the riots over the "poor kid" with his 12 year old photo. How about the fact that this piece of trash robbed a store and when the officer identified him and tried to apprehend him under non-violent means he attacked the officer. Pretty simple...fight with an officer there is a good chance you end up dead. Just Don't Do It.

By his own account PO Wilson made no connection between the robbery and his stop. Agreed on the second to last sentence.

I think this is becoming a phenomenon with these police shootings. Most of their reasons is because they were assaulted, or tried to get my gun. You're so correct that it's time for the body cams. The police should not have any problem with body cams if they are being honest. They would show exactly what happend and hopefully limit the riots. I'm a big supporter of police officers. They have to make a split second decision, just like in combat, and face scrutiny whether they are right or wrong. I know there are still cities like Ferguson, Mo. and that makes me sick at my stomach. How are the blacks and whites supposed to trust each other when this keeps happening?

I agree with you SGT (Join to see), the ability to document the situations and show exactly what happens would make the case concrete for both the officers and the citizens they protect and serve.

I was talking to my wife about that this morning. I said the officer got a report he was a violent person and had a record with assault on it. The officer didn't take any chances. With a rap sheet like that, I wouldn't either. If the people would just obey the officer and not give him any reason to fear his life being in danger, they would stand a better chance not getting shot. IMHO Thank you for both services. Be safe out there.
