I have read a lot about submarines off the NC coast in WWII. Thanks for sharing.

Standard Oil and Conocco Philips were still trading with Nazi Germany as was a lot of American big business. "Their" ships were getting through/un-touched, etc. While Japanese-Americans were locked up as a pre-caution following Pearl Harbor, no such moves were made against the *MILLIONS* of Americans possessing German or Italian heritage. So it was kind of assumed/expected that war would not come to America's shore. In fact, it was soooooooooo bad that a good percentage of the military upper echelon was anglophobe including its highest ranker, Admiral King. Someone with FDR's ear let it fly that the British were enjoying success with convoy-ing and FDR brought it up. The anti-English immediately let rip with epithets, derision, insults, etc.
Churchill's dream came true of America getting involved in WW2, but Yankee Doodle was not acting "as fact" as perhaps Winston felt they should. So MI-5 infiltrated American press and soon, the secret stories of U-Boat sinkings were making their way to the public. The outcry grew horrendous. FDR again gathered his JCOS and threatened death and dismemberment. Begrudgingly King relented and made plans for the British to fly to DC and teach us everything they knew about convoys. Within months the kills tailed off. Operation Drumbeat was a success tho as the Germans learned long range submarining and the Americans learned how successful that could/would be against Japan.
Silent Victory - Clay Blair
Spycatcher - Peter Wright
Trading With The Enemy - Charles Higham
U-Boat - Edward Hoyt
Operation Drumbeat - Michael Gannon
