Maybe its just me but why does this happen or more to the point, NEED to happen? Do I pay the bank a "late fee" for being late with my mortgage? I believe I do. And what about the water bill? Is there a late fee for that as well? Why...I believe their is. So why are passengers who skip out or show up late, allowed any kind of special leeway? If Joe Sixpack misses his flight, the ticket price was still valid. So while the plane is technically taking off with 1 empty seat, the airline's bank account isn't. The flight "was full" according to the bank balance, right?
So sell 100 tickets on a 100 seat plane. Not really sure why this is rocket science to the airline. "Well Don, what if I'm late because the TSA held me up doing an unlawful search?" Point taken but more back to my point, how is this the airlines' problem? If your cab got you to the airport late, again, it would seem that the C A B is the problem, yes? So sue the TSA and sue the cab and leave the airline out of it. Voila. Problem solved. If the cab companies push to get out of it, people (capitalism) will just not use cabs. If the TSA gets sued too badly, they'll clean their processes up.
I mean be practical. If you bought Superbowl tickets and again, didn't show up or showed up late, would you get anything back to compensate you? No again. So stop the stupidity with airline seats. Treat them like any other ticket. The airline is selling you a seat. Not time. Not management. The airline is not (and should not) being paid to get your kids to school, park your car, etc.

Overbooking should be illegal across the board, including doctors and dentist.

SN (Join to see) - My time has value too, don't make me wait because they over book their schedule to maximize their profits.

LTC (Join to see) And check out their 'tude if we get to their office a couple minutes late but we NEVER get to see that doctor or dentist within 20 minutes of our appointment time. Blood pressure is rising again....

Probably not. Not because I think the practice is a good thing, but mostly because I would rather the government be involved in as little as possible. Instead maybe these airlines should be held more accountable by the actual customer. United will pay dearly for this fiasco but they will survive and it has made the customer more knowledgeable about these practices throughout the whole industry. Maybe we will start seeing airlines change there practices. Maybe.
