This process has always amazed me, but then again guess it's the Navy version of in-flight refueling.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen In-Flight refueling, plus throw in a side of beef and 50 five-inch shells.
I was on a guided-missile destroyer coming back from Nam. We accompanied an oiler. SLOW. The system of supports and wires can also be used to transfer personnel via a Bos'n's chair. Someone had the great idea to swap a couple crew members from each ship for a day. A guy from my shop got selected (he sure as hell didn't volunteer.) He was half way across when both ships rolled toward each other. The Bos'n's chair dropped into the Pacific then reappeared. Tommy spent the whole day in wet clothes and shoes. Can you do that in-flight? LOL

Can't remember a night UNREP when I was on a DLG or a DDG. I do remember taking on fuel from the carrier USS America while I was on the DLG. My station was After IC. That is about on the waterline and amidships. The America was refueling us and running landings and take-offs at the same time. It sounded like I was on the flight deck, at least to me.

Then there was the time, again on the DLG, when refueling and there was a large oil spill on our ship. Not my job to clean it up. Thank goodness.
