Well... Let me put on my tin foil hat.
I suspect that the powers that be in DC are not friends of the Trump Administration. They are counting on highly visible, violent confrontation, and for the media to present the "correct perspective."
The coverage always show the lunatic White Nationalists heavily armed, with numerical superiority in the attack and the lunatic counter protesters will be shown outnumbered, defensively armed, and trying to escape. Then the media will lay the blame at President trump's feet.
The fact is that the white nationalists are repugnant throwbacks from a time best gone. The counter protesters are not any better. Neither group represents anything more than the lunatic fringe and the majority of Americans including myself are repulsed by both groups.

I assume one rally was scheduled and the other decided to schedule as a "counter"?

Also, if say the white nationalist rally was approved first (1st amendment rights and all) and then say ANTIFA tried to schedule a protest to counter (they likely wouldn't register, but this is the example) and they were denied as it would likely cause conflict, what kind of shit would this guy get into for approving "white supremacists" but denying "anti fascists"? It would likely be best for him to just approve both and let the groups handle it themselves. Inform the police to be on call in the area as it's going to cause violence and arrest the people who could not keep it as a non-violent protest.

SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint - I cañ see a fun house mirror legal logic scenario where both groups argue the exclusive right to that exact spot where the government functionary who approves/disapproves the permits gets hauled into court about favoring one or the other...or ignoring their first amendment rights. How much of the city's resources get consumed in a drawn out court process where a liberal judge refuses to acknowledge the public safety risk to the rank and file citizens that have nothing to do with this rally or its participants. CPT Zachary Brooks .
Perhaps a radical proposal. See if there is an abandoned industrial site that can be walled in and let them go at it for 24 hours and see who makes it out.
