Now, the U.S. government is starting to work on a national policy for autonomous cars, and it’s promising to invest $4 billion over the course of the next 10 years “to accelerate the development and adoption of safe vehicle automation through real-world pilot projects.”

Good to hear it's being worked on, but I want more, faster, now. It'll be interesting to watch developments here. The tendency of technology companies to break regulations or laws that are inconvenient to serve a customer need until customers demand the laws be changed may not apply here as it did for instance to Uber's growth. There's just more deep topics with more risk and liability (software makers, hardware makers, automakers, insurance companies). We'll see. I'm hopeful but not starry eyed.
