In the grand scheme of things, its time to get out. We're not the world's policeman anymore. Time to get out of places that have been wanting/yelling/begging us to leave for some time. From a temperature perspective, there are "jungle" areas in the Southern USA that can be utilized for training. Plus, it would stimulate Southern USA economies to make new training areas.
And on the flip side...
Be careful what you pray for Japan... What "economy" - outside of military activity - does Okinawa have? Sure you want us to leave? Honest injun? Might wanna ask the Philippinos how that worked out for them...

Japan is suffering from a serious real estate shortage, exacerbated by the Fukushima disaster. I suspect they will have no problem easy replacing the economic activity they are losing.

PO3 Donald Murphy
SSG (Join to see) - True, but if the SOF agreement with Japan is anything like the ones in England and Germany, they are being paid well over and above what the land is worth, etc. We're silly enough to pay $x per acre but that doesn't mean the average Japanese is. Especially as its not a tourism area.

PO3 Donald Murphy - Given the current value of Japanese real estate, I doubt our "rent" comes anywhere close to the economic value of the property.

Hey, President Obama is giving up another military training area and doing it just before leaving office. More of the same.
