My uncle enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor and did his basic training at Naval Station Newport where I proudly worked as a civilian. He served on this ship at the end of the war and sent a scarf home from Hawaii where the ship sailed to. An image of the envelop is attached. Unfortunately I lost my uncle two years ago. My aunt who he addressed the envelope to is still alive and that is the address where I was born!

Good interesting post about your uncle. My Dad enlisted in 1940 into the Navy, I was told he left Pearl Naval base the day before Japan bombed the harbor and was shipped to the states. He went through WWII on a destroyer and ammo ship, later in the 50's on a submarine.

SFC William Farrell - He was E-5 at time of picture with my mother and brother. Picture was right after the war about 1947, before he was stationed at the White House for a year. He was a cook, must have been a good one to be cooking for the president.
