I thought it was a socialists paradise. What, socialism going horribly wrong and the governement stomping all over people's rights?

The problem with Socialism is that once it's established its "For the people" and can't be criticized. Bullies and corrupt jack wagons infest Socialist government from top to bottom. Any position from a toll booth operator to the supreme ruler treat funds like a piggy bank and the people as subjects.

Yes i tend to be wary of people from the far right and the far left for the same reason. The political spectrum is, indeed, a circle.

No. I guess that Venezuela is failing as a state and might keep fighting itself internally. A strong man might develop authoritarian rule but then no one is free to do as they please. Without effective government, people are not safe to pursue a living. What a pity!

The Americas has actually had a fairly peaceful decade at least with respect to civil wars and state-on-state conflicts. Unfortunately, with the news coming out of Venezuela, we may see that streak come to an end
