Guys, I'd kinda thought that for a long, long time now, honest...I spent a lotta time at one major grad school, trying to get funded to do my PhD after getting off active...the grad dorms were quite literally wall to wall with them, I mean it really didn't take Einstein to kinda put two and two together, and realize why they were there, you know? So, honest, I'm by no means surprised, I'm just appalled it took so long to realize the obvious...when I'd tried to complain about the whole thing, I got basically told to go fly a kite...if you look into how assistantships are granted at grad schools in the US, esp in serious hard and/or bioscience programs, you'll most definitely see that the bulk of grad, research, and teaching assistantships (GAs, RAs, and TAs) have gone mainly to overseas students, for the simple reason US students would rather generally work, and, if they're gonna do serious grad school at all, they're typically gonna do it part time...when I'd spoken with the rad committee at the school, for the department involved, I'd mentioned I'd just gotten off four years active...I was actually asked, I kid thee all not, word for word, verbatim: "What in God's name does your having just done four years active have to do with us funding you at a public college?" Understand, what really got under my skin was that is was, in fact, a public college, not private...private schools, by and large, can pretty much do as they please, for the most part, depending on where the research funding is from...TAs, private schools, it's their money, their rules...same with GAs, which are largely admin spots, answering phones, helping with paperwork...RAs, however, are often public-funded, hence, the dilemma I perceived...mind you, I got absolutely nowhere, a big fat zero, goose egg, zip, nada...and trust me, I saw many, many instances where other students from other countries also, at least, given the past nearly two decades of history, at least were from what I'd thought as equally relatively questionable places...one guy from one place was under a faculty member who'd specifically asked the department to use me, I had a 2.88 GPA, the school insisted on a 3.0, minimum, if one only had a single bachelors, that's why I got nowhere at the time...the guy I'm referring to was also under that faculty member, he was also fully funded by his own country, he explicitly told me so, and, thus, was double-funded, the other piece from the school itself, using public funds...now please understand, guys, all that was decades ago now, ancient history, all except for the fact that, now, evidently, finally, the whole thing I'd noticed, others in serious authority, are, as the article explains, also apparently now noticing...I loathe the necessity to explain all that, as the mere mention of such thoughts conjures up imagery of xenophobia, which I would of course never mean, certainly...when I'd gone to the dean of the school involved to grouse, way back then, he also asked me why it should matter (though I didn't handle it right, he was going to try to help, I didn't wait, went over his head back then, he got irked, and basically wrote me off thereafter, which I obviously always regretted thereafter, of course)...my answer was, quite candidly: "Because I LIVE here"...now, that likely, admittedly, wasn't probably the most tactful way to try to get my point across, and, had I waited for him to help me, he actually might've, I think, if I hadn't been so impatient at that point, for myriad unrelated reasons, mainly personal ineptitude, I suppose...I merely point out that, in virtually every instance I "tried" to point out that the practice, aside from being, to may admittedly personal way of thinking, certainly seemed inequitable, esp. me being just off active, I was totally, completely brushed off and told to pretty much zip my lip and disappear, every single time, honest...now I ask all of you, candidly, if I were so inaccurate decades ago, why do we see the present article now here, you know? I mean, either I was totally off base then, which I genuinely didn't think so, or, the article here is, which I think also isn't the case, that's all I'm saying...I'd really be most eager for any thoughts about my whole sad tale of woe, such as any of you might possibly care to send...believe me, as I said, I've known about that whole problem for a LONG, LONG time, guys, honest, I know I might get disagreed with, however, I'd be genuinely interested in any thoughts, also, good catch on the article here, as well, many thanks....

And interestingly, I'd found out, on looking into the whole thing back then, that faculty, regardless of who funds them, can basically take whomever they want for an RA spot, pretty much zero restrictions, amazingly, even if the funds are public, at least, honestly, that's what I'd been told, which pretty much floored me then, as it still does now, guys, honest, you know?
