I had the dubious distinction of being, at age 11, within 100 miles of St. Helens when it blew. It being the early 80's (height of the cold war), upon seeing the mushroom cloud and never even thinking volcano, I ran inside yelling to my mom that the Russians had just nuked us. True story. I could go on about the horrors of 4 feet of volcanic ash (it's crystalline, and therefore harmful to lungs and throat), but that's for another day. I suspect PO1 William "Chip" Nagel 's experience in PI was even more...intense, for Pinatubo.

Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on April 17, 1815 heavy eruptions of the Tambora volcano in Indonesia killed almost 100,000 people directly and indirectly.
