Xenophobic violence against Asian Americans continues to surge across the United States.
A group tracking anti-Asian discrimination says there have been more than 2,800 attacks since the pandemic began last March. Nearly half of those attacks have occurred in California, where recent violence against seniors in Chinatown, Oakland, has created fear and tension.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel In 1949, ‘Sam’, owner of the nearby grocery would give me a ‘chit’ with Chinese characters and tell me to go to —— store in Oakland’s Chinatown. Upon my arrival at the store and presentation of my ‘chit’ I would purchase calls of the firecrackers I could fit into my AWOL bag. At high school the next day, I was very busy selling firecrackers for twice my purchase price.
