A very moving film to watch. For myself, the most difficult scenes to get through involved the cavalry charge that killed the young captain...Despite the "over the top" thematic and build-up, that singular moment of personal realization got to me. You get to thinking about the relationship between the young officer and his horse, the boy who raised it, and the pennant from another man's time and war strapped to the saddle, the last gasp of one form of destruction and the sulfurous breath of a new one...then, there's just an empty saddle and a lost horse, symbolizing how much was just destroyed by a single, cheap lump of lead. It's like the character sees all of this in that one fateful second. To my mind, it is gut-wrenching, not "romantic" or "glorious".
