Most conflict stems from a failure to communicate. Has a spouse, a child, anyone ever said "You're not hearing me?" That's not a question. It's a complaint and the sound of barriers going up to any further communication. Many years ago, I was introduced to two books that helped me with this issue. One was about Walt Disney and it explained the key to his success in managing creative people and the creative process. He would first obtain agreement on the question/issue/problem at hand before proceeding in a search for solutions. During the initial phase of searching for solutions, everyone was invited to offer suggestions without judgment. Indeed, nothing would invite Disney's ire faster than responding to a suggestion as "That's dumb" or "That's ridiculous" or "That'll never work". The idea is that every suggestion is valid and even bad ones have the potential of inspiring good ones. The second book was by Dr. Carl Rogers on Active Listening. Rather than explain in poorly, here's a excerpt... http://wholebeinginstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/Rogers_Farson_Active-Listening.pdf
