Med cruises used to be the norm. I was part of a MEU that went through the Suez Canal in 1981 ( I was embarked on the USS Saipan (LHA-2). We were on high alert because of threats from Libya. It was also the same month Anwar Sadat, President of Egypt was assasinated by Islamic fantics in his own army during a parade.

1stSgt Eugene Harless I did time on the Saipan for a 91-92 MEU. On the way back from the PG we stopped in Hurgada, Egypt and took a trip to Cairo where we toured Sadat's tomb.
