I fear in today's society the only ones we can really depend on are fellow Veterans ,one of the sad lessons we Vietnam veterans learned so long ago,and in my case the only people I trust even after all these years.

I trust some veterans more than anyone else. Very few non-veterans are in my close circle of people I trust. I hear the nice platitudes frequently, but I see no real action to help Veterans. Hopefully one day that will change.

CPT Jared Speaks-Sir I appreciate your concern and caring ,I met with more indifference than out right hostility some of my Brothers later on in the war had ,that being said I still hold civilians in a less than favorable light ( even though I've been one since 1968) concerning veterans support, again thanks for your comments and I know they ring true,Phil.

I had the opportunity to visit the Wall in DC, I was with a group of people who were I guess you would call us a delegation to a 12 Step National Body. As the others walked and chatted quietly I just stood and stared. When those I was with noticed that I was no longer with them they walked back. I had tears running down my face they asked me what was wrong, I told them that I could have been on that wall yet I wasn't. I joined the Marine Corp on a 3 year none guaranteed enlistment fully expecting to go to Nam. I said that these were the Heroes. After that I just wanted to get back to where we were staying and think.
There's a saying that I heard that I think explains a lot about how Washington does it's business, They Forget " He who forgets his past is destined to repeat it"

I had the great good fortune as a young enlisted infantryman to be stationed in DC with the Army's ceremonial unit, 1st Battalion, 3rd US Infantry, The Old Guard. I had the honor of participating in the honor guard for the dedication. Later, I had the honor of serving as Color Sergeant for the joint service color guard dedicating The Three Servicemen statue.

Now, more than 30 years later, I still drive down to DC at least a couple times each year to go for a walk. My path varies, but it always takes me by the The Wall and through Arlington to The Tomb. I find the Wall to be as moving today as it was the first time I saw it in 1982. A couple of years ago, I watched a docent (Vietnam Veteran who volunteers to serve at the Wall) help an brother and sister make an etching of their father's name. A solemn moment that brought a tear to my eye.
