PFC (Join to see) If we want to know what the future holds in operations it's a good idea to look at where money is being spent. stealth helicopters, intelligence technology, high tech communications, building high-tech special operations headquarters and the transformation a C-130 cargo plane into a state-of-the-art flying hospital have consumed a large amount of the total operations budget. This investment has paid clear dividends Osama bin Laden, Somali pirates (CPT Richard Philips), and Abu Musab Al Zarqawi to name a few.

Great point! How do you think the conventional military will adapt to the greater use of technology? Will their role diminish, grow, or change in some way?

PFC (Join to see) - Warfare is changing therefore we must change to meet it. There will definitely be greater use of technology however I believe we should not lose our base skills as a result of it. Irregular warfare (fighting in the shadows) requires men and women with specialized training and a special type of resolve "find, fix, finish, exploit, analyze, and disseminate." It's not just the high profile strikes they conduct, they work with civil-affairs units that provide medical, veterinary, or agricultural assistance to civilians, improving the standing of local governments granting our forces access to and a greater understanding of local conditions and populations. Our military will continue to change as it always has, technology will play a part in that and there will be need to have qualified individuals in those areas, basic need units will still be in play, the change will be their position on the battlefield.
