What a single sound says about you

When I was twelve we stayed at my mother's parent's house in Lake City, Florida after returning from three years in the Territory of Hawaii while my dad attended OCS in Newport, RI. One Saturday I went with my cousins to the local liquor store to buy the booze for my grandfather's weekend poker game (no ID checks back then). It was hot, so I asked the owner for a glass of water. Turns out that he was able to identify my place of birth to southeast Kansas just by the way I said the word water ---- a real master of regional dialects.
