I'm pretty sure he could have done something to avoid the collision, even with the new T-11 canopy!

The fact that the Soldier did not even attempt to slip away says this was done on a dare or bet. As crazy as this might sound I have seen worse. When I was in the Pathfinder Course there was a Ranger who wanted to show everyone how experienced he was so he ran with the wind in order to land by the DZSO (Cadre) on a very windy day. Needles to say he was MEDAVAC'd off of Fryar.
