Shoppers on military bases enjoy tax-free gas, groceries, and name brand coffee, but there is a strong lure to spend money off base for many of the region’s military families.
Over the past seven years of their marriage, Mary and John Walker have lived near three different military installations. John is in the Army and stationed at the Pentagon. The couple live in Alexandria with their three kids with another on the way. Their go-to base for their shopping needs is Fort Myer in Arlington.
Mary says she likes reaping the benefits of getting tax-free gas, Starbuck coffee, prescription glasses, swim lessons for her kids, and non-essential grocery store items on the fort. But off base Mary also shops at Target for her kids’ clothes, Trader Joe’s for her fruits and vegetables, and a local coffee shop. The Walkers are just one of hundreds of thousands of military families in the region that don’t have to pay taxes on items on military bases.

It means tattoo parlors, used car lots, Korean restaurants, strip joints, a boatload of barber shops and dry cleaning establishments. Oh and it means hookers, lots and lots of hookers.

[~168853:PO1 William "Chip" How in the hell could I forget pawnshop? There are plenty of those around military instillations along with pay day lending and title pawn establishments. And not to leave out the ladies and dependapotamus, hair extension shops and nail salons.
