Interesting article. I was surprised that the influx of well trained and very professional Eastern European and Russian soldiers also helped end the romantic notion of criminal pasts etc. I had a Russian born Anesthesia student, a great guy, who I was teasing one day. I said “ Gee, how would you like to be a Russian spy and all of a sudden your job disappears and your stuck in DC? What would you do?” The student got very serious and said “ Mr. Brown, these people are in high demand around the world. They command large salaries . They work for governments, private corporations and the like”. Shortly after my discussion with the student there was a documentary on the French Foreign Legion. A lot of special ops Russian and Estern European soldiers joined the Legion to start new lives and get French citizenships. The mortality rate for legionaries was about 25% when the documentary was made. The influx of these soldiers increased the professionalism of the FFL and made it much more difficult for the average joe to join.

The ffl has people from almost every country and from near almost every occupation. There are many with military experience. As where it would be unlikely to see someone with specops experience from a western world country joining after their stint in the military it is not at all outside the wheel house of possibilities to see guys with specops experience from Western countries using said experience to slide right through the doors to a five year contract and an eventual french citizenship. Yes lyc brown is right in his assumption

I've talked to some French Army officers about the Foreign Legion. They compare it to the US Marines based on expeditionary force structure and infantry first mindset. Like the article mentions, they used to operate under "no questions asked" recruitment, but now have Interpol checks as part of screening and selection. While FFL attracts applicants worldwide, the biggest groups today are East European and Latin American.

An. Applicant would have to be in pretty serious trouble to draw the attention of Interpol. The applicant don’t need to be concerned unless s’thing they done wrong crosses int’l Boundaries ..

Thank you, my friend SGT (Join to see) for sharing the article What ever happened to the French Foreign Legion? It was an interesting article,
I grew up enjoying the 1939 movie "Beau Geste" starring Gary Cooper and other movies focused on the French Foreign Legion in North Africa..
I am familiar with their operations in north Africa and in French Indochina through the fall of Diem Bien Phu
