My mother a German was five when the war broke out. My grandfather who was in the German Army as a guard at rail yards in France, died many years before I was born so I didn't get to hear his stories. But my mom had very vivid memories of the war. My grandfather was injured and was nursed back to health by the French resistance (Opa was born in Marne France). Mom said they where all scared to death of Hitler. They where never sympathisers of Nazi Germany. My moms stories will be something I treasure for ever.

Getting history from someone who lived it is incredible, even invaluable. Great post.
