Knew all of this. CMS was a brutal dictator who failed to protect his country from Japan during WWII. Mao was able to establish himself and force him out. He ran to Formosa, now called Taiwan. Although we do not recognize them diplomatically, because they consider themselves the only true government of China, we support them. And PRC will never stop trying to unite them. Much like North and South Korea. But different.

Taiwan was given back to the Chinese when the British left. They wanted to be independent, but China said no and settled on a form of autonomy. - The quick version of events
