I see it at work a lot, just very subtle. Mainly with Asians and Hispanics who make up about 85% of the employees. It helps to be bi-lingual sometimes, especially when they don't know. I hear a lot of things.
Japanese can be the nicest racists you'll ever meet. They will flat out say "no gaijin" (no foreigner) to your face and cross their wrists forming an "X" or have signs posted at entrances to their business.
As long as you have people who look different physically, it will never end. It know's no borders.

I've seen that in Japan. They are simply matter-of-fact. They don't allow foreigners in some clubs. I often wonder what their reaction would be if it was someone who was a native born Japanese Citizen whose ancestors were European or African.

Humans are tribal and tend to stereotype based on all kinds of things, particularly people who look different. That's how we are wired and why we will not be living in a post anything America. I believe that only with some self awareness and exposure can we try to tamp it down to the extent possible.

I have stories too, I remember one time in Cannes France was a sign on a couple of places that read no blacks allowed, I like really this is 1998.

I remember in Korea that I had two black Marines in my unit who couldn't a cab to pick them up. They had to hide while I hailed the cab and held the door. The driver about had a fit.

SGT (Join to see) - Oh, goodness.. where to start..

Growing up, I was told that, when it comes to dating, the only acceptable race was white. Top no-no was black, no explanation given. I was even discouraged from dating other Koreans.

Keeping in mind Korea's homogeneous population and its history with Japan, my mom was disgusted that my Chemistry lab partner was Japanese. This was in the SF Bay Area. There's Asians everywhere, for God's sake.

Also weird: my mom shows great discomfort just describing a person as black. She often just mumbles it under her breath, just in case there's a black person around.

Army: KATUSAs asked a black soldier if her color could be scrubbed off. We're all medics, and we were messing around in medical supplies. No joke, she took an alcohol wipe to her skin to prove a point, but some dirt came off and they all spent 10 minutes rubbing those wipes on her arms to see if it could possibly be her actual skin color.

Sometimes our black soldiers would get stopped in public for photo ops or to have their skin touched. Koreans can be very touchy people.

Korean store owners will put a significant amount of effort monitoring black people in their stores. Like, comical dedication to surveillance.

There's more, but I'll add when I think of it.

SSG Jessica Bautista - I've dealt with a few of these. Koreans, even male, are very touchy, especially with biceps.
