I think sometimes it's not just bias against veterans, but issues with the whole hiring process in general. If you don't have the exact keywords the resume scanning software has been programmed with, you'll not even make it into the front door. Or you didn't spend three hours filling out the online application form. Then you're having to impress someone who may or may not have any knowledge of the position, but you'd best darn well be able to sell yourself. After that, you may have multiple interviews with one or more people, and you'd better be able to impress all of them as well.
Finally, if you jump through all those hoops, you may blow it by naming a higher salary than they're willing to pay.

Excellent Question and I think the survey may help others. I was lost when I first got out. I went to interviews and met with people, kept getting told to relax it isn't a military board and that I needed to smile and be more personable. Found a company that said "Vet friendly" I got hired direct due to being a vet and a medic. The employers didn't like it at first due to the fact I am still in national guard and they have to find ways around my other schedule, they didn't like the fact I had VA appointments and other things to do on my time off when they needed someone's shift last minute covered. They do like the fact that I am early to work and have never taken a sick day, I am a team player and I step up to get things done even if that means overtime. I am supposed to have 10 hour shifts 4 days a week but end up clocking 12hours/ 4-5 days a week depending on the other stuff and who calls in. I am currently looking to go some where else due to the fact that they are exploiting the fact that I will cover and do things to make the office run smooth.

SPC Steven Schoenhut, I looked up your company and their website. They seem to be one of the top notch prison/ jails healthcare facilities. Maybe you're just tired of the prison scene. None of my bees wax but trying to help you.

SGT (Join to see) - It's not the job or the company... I work night shift and am in charge of labs for my facility. We have people that come in when they want leave when they want... So I have been doing my lab work and running sick call at 07 while others goto the gym get a good work out that they post on facebook, don't show up until I have been there for almost an hour over my time and act like it's perfectly fine. I have talked to my HSA about it and he stated well sometimes in life you have to be a team player... and one team type stuff... it has been going on for 4 months

It's gotten to the point that other employees are getting mad for me now about the situation but is still going on

I can't blame you for wanting to leave. Being a team player is one thing but being taken advantage of is BS. Even your HSA backs them up. I hope you find something you will enjoy working for real soon.

SSG Manuel A. Gonzalez, It's such a waste of talent and great employees. All they need is a chance and unless they blow the chance, like TSgt Ron Charpia, wrote, they would get off the streets. One problem with them staying homeless for such a long time, they give up. They're on drugs, alcohol, or both and it's too late for them. It's a way of life they have accepted, and that is sad.
