Good ol' convenience of the IoT. Basically, Twitter and other popular sites are down because a few hundred-thousand fridges and DTV boxes went Botnet Skynet.

10s of millions is the more accurate figure. It's terrifying how little care people have for cyber security these days. That complacency is why this attack happened.
