The General Mattis of my day was AL Gray. He was the essence of the warrior curmudgeon. I got to be a company grade "hanger on" when he spoke to the field grades and above when he became the Commandant. One of the things he said that I loved was... "we don't fight in silk boxers and tennis shoes, we need to stop PT'ing that way." I know its bad for the knees, but I think physical fitness evaluations need to be done in "utes and boots" and relate to combat tasks.
I'd like to see:
Core strength) instead of push-ups, pull ups, and crunches
_Fill 200 sand bags and stack them in a stable square block 8 deep
_Load 100 ammo cans of simulated 5.56 ball onto the back of a deuce and a half, covered and aligned
_Grenade throw for distance and accuracy
Speed and endurance)
_Obstacle Course with service rifle, helmet, and deuce gear
_25 mile road march with 140lb load
_1 km 5 gallon Gerry can carry

Maj John Bell Did you just suggest a common sense PFT? How dare you sir! There is no place for common sense in the military! Your suggestions is a much better idea than hat is currently in place the only problem I can really see with it is that there would need to be a test for each specialization. The PFT needs of the infantry are far different from those of artillery. Needs of artillery are far different from pilots. So going with your theory, there would need to be several different tests.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - I doubt that we will fight nothing but asymmetrical wars forever and ever. After hearing General Gray, my unit's never PT'd in anything but UTES and Boots for unit PT, except the PFT.
Any Marine in a combat theater needs to be able to fill sandbags, conduct unit resupply of service rifle ammunition, throw grenades, maneuver with weapon and deuce gear if counter attacking a successful attack, conduct security patrols, conduct an administrative move without benefits of motor T, ("Truck got BLOWED UP SIR!"), and refueling vehicles and generators in base camp. ("LT this is not Domino's Pizza", send someone to the installation depot to get fuel)
Then I would also have MOS specific fitness evaluations. I guess fixed wing fighter and attack pilots would have some event that requires them to drink a lot of booze and tell stories while they maneuver their hands in simulated dogfight maneuvers.

interesting how they replaced the testing of Working one set of Muscle groups for working other Muscle groups that are not necessarily related...
