The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) gives workers and their families who lose their health benefits the right to choose to continue group health benefits provided by their group health plan for limited periods of time under certain circumstances such as voluntary or involuntary job loss.
Former employers who had 20 or more employees at the time of your job loss are required to tell you about your health insurance rights within 15 days of layoff, furlough, or termination.

The only time I used COBRA, about 3 years ago, it was *way* cheaper than anything I could get from the Market setup by ObummerCare. It gave us 18 months of very expensive care. $1200/mo for the premium and a $25,000 deductible. The best we could do from the Market was either $2,200/mo premiums w/$15,000 deductible or $1,600/mo premiums w/$50,000 deductible. COBRA did cover my wife's 4th shoulder surgery but we ended up paying out of pocket over $40,000 that year - including prescriptions.
