Born into slavery in the American South, Maryland. Sorry. I can't help myself. When anyone questions my claim to have been born in the South, they laugh when I say "Maryland". And, yes, she rocked...

My father (and I) were born in Baltimore and my mother was from Alabama. When they got married in Alabama the pastor made some comment about my mom "finding herself a yankee" and my dad stopped the proceedings to correct him.

Michael Healy of the US Revenue Cutter Service, also born into slavery, had a much more influential career than Tubman.

Michael Augustine Healy (September 22, 1839 – August 30, 1904) was a career officer with the United States Revenue Cutter Service (predecessor of the United States Coast Guard), reaching the rank of captain. He commanded several vessels within the territory of the Alaskan coastline.[4]
