Why Is the US Military Short-Staffing Its Sickest Children?

Excuse me!!!!!! The military is to defend the nation from external threats by killing people and breaking their ability to wage war. I am reacting to the article's opening statement, The whole purpose is to deter, fight and win wars...not be another social welfare program.
"The military health-care system serves 2 million children with just a handful of full-time pediatric social workers. In the civilian world, this kind of staffing is 'unimaginable.'"
I'm sorry but we have TRICARE referrals to take care of pediatric issues. The concerns mentioned in this article are no different than those our civilian population have to deal with. If you have a child with an exceptional medical issue, that is what special programs like EFMP are for.
But maybe I'm out of touch with today's "touchy feely" military.

Sir, I don't have the heart to read the article, but on my drive home from work today, I was actually thinking along similar lines. We have a lot of bleeding hearts that want to solve one problem or another with the military, but all effort that goes into "solving" these problems is effort that isn't spent training soldiers to do their jobs. So we are less trained than we should be, less competent than we should be, and in the end worse off than if we were simply let train. Personal two minute rant.
