Why Was the Passchendaele Battlefield Such a Nightmare ?— A Roads Classic

The before and after battlefield photographs from there are horror-inspiring. It went from green pastures and picturesque villages to nothing but mud and destroyed buildings.

There was another war so devastating it inspired a family to leave their homeland and come to the colonies after being recruited to fight a different kind of war by out farming the enemy.

I imagine those fields were not fertile for years after from all the explosive residue.
