Interesting story.
He had already been, reprimanded, stripped of his SF tab and award for valor for that deployment was revoked/denied, and he had been processed for separation with a General Under Honorable.
Problem may have been self inflicted by appearing on TV admitting to the killing, in addition to comments/admissions made during polygraph taken as part of application process for the CIA, in using that he allegedly dug up the body and burned it on the base to dispose of it, and you have some issues.

It’s an unfortunate story, for sure. If I was advising him...stop talking publicly about this. That’s what got you into this mess. You can’t defuse a bomb that’s gone off, but you can stop yourself from walking into new minefields.
Be quiet, gather any support you can. But John Q Public isn’t going to back you on this one. Once it’s died down in the public, hopefully you’ll have enough internal support from people with enough rank to make this go away.

Never, ever speak publicly to the press about any wartime activity without getting it precleared.
