Fifty years ago today, I stood on the pier at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia as part of the commissioning crew for the U.S.S. Dubuque (LPD-8), a state of the art new type of amphibious assault vessel named after the City of Dubuque, Iowa. She served with distinction for 44 years before being retired to the reserve fleet in Bremerton, Washington in 2011. It just didn't seem right to forget my home of three years and the many others who stood with me that day. Thanks for the memories, Mighty 8.

Thank you , Capt. Waddell. She really was a great duty station. Being flag configured, we also got to stop in a number of ports we might not have seen otherwise. If I had followed her better, I would have known when she was being decommissioned, and I would have made the trip to the west coast to be present. I did make it into the history video they showed at the ceremony, so I guess I can say I was there in spirit.
