Good read with some very good points in it. I disagree with the E&Y finance folks - and have yet to see anything effective outside the actual bombing of the money reserves IS had (that was effective) . But the other aspects are what has changed in Iraq that breaks the cycle of violence? If nothing - then those areas behind the front lines that IS is active in - means you have to fight there after Mosul.... 10 months to take Mosul from what CENTCOM claim was but 5000 IS fighters ( and we all knew that was underestimation magic) already turned that into a propaganda victory for generations to come. Can we afford another such victory?

LTC Eric Udouj sounds like they are suggesting a modified version of COIN. I think the whole issue stems from so many various tribes that just don't get along w/ one another. Sure, you may find a city that generally gets along, but the vast countryside still holds true to the tribal nature that Sykes-Picot tried to ignore, thinking that everyone would just fall into line.

It's already confusing who the good and bad guys are. A bad situation that leads to people getting caught in the crossfire. Add black uniforms for US to the equation and it's just one big kill zone. Plus there's no uniformity of alliance. One day Russia bombs the rebels, then they fire missiles on ISIS. All the while threatening to shoot down US planes. Very bad situation.
