I remember that incident...I think he tried and tried to enlist and then forged his parents signature & the story was he was one hell of a good marine in Vietnam.

This story needs to be told, especially to today's generation of Marines, so the story will be continue to be told as part to our Corps lore... and to the 14-16 year olds of our society, who can hear realities of his story of true dedication, sacrifice and hard work on the "real" field of battle and not the "fascination" seen through their video games.

SGT John " Mac " McConnell I didn't know this! Thank you for sharing this information! He must have been an amazing young man to have such conviction at such a young age. Imagine what or who he might have become had he not been killed in action.

He was big for his age and back then 1969 the Marine Recruiters were having a rough time meeting enlistment goals.. I tried to enlist at 17 but was told to come back when I was 18 which was only a few days. But there were others who enlisted at 16 and 17 without their parents signature they just forged them. One guy was a sole survivor so his Mother got him out. He came up to me one day to say good bye and said his mother wanted him to come home.

I was 17 and got held up a day due to improper paperwork on the permission.
