So apparently replacing old trash with newer trash is considered an upgrade in the Iranian Air Force.

The SU-35 is no slouch, they are very capable airplanes. The only thing is that Russia handcuffs the planes to 7 G's for their export and they do not get the full capabilities in the avionics. Although they may mitigate this with China. The PRC uses indigenous systems on their J-11's which are Chinese licensed copies of the Russian Flankers. Of course Russia may protest on them doing this, but I ran sort of does what it wants to.
Iran will use these more for regime and critical infrastructure defense. Their military relies heavily on TBM's, SAM's and insurgent warfare tactics, from their IRGC AL Qud's force.

Lt Col (Join to see) It's no slouch, but if we were able to overcome its tactics and purported performance at Red Flag in an FB-111 decades ago I just don't see its relevance in today's environment.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - Hard to say to be honest. The tactics might not necessarily reveal the planes capabilities. I know a lot of foreign users outside of Russia tend to be handcuffed in capabilities and don't get the full training on how to effectively use them. Sorta like a rich guy who buys a Ferrari but doesn't really know how to drive. I know Russia is heavily reliant on AWAC and GCI to do almost anything. I would assume Iran is as well. Of course they would be no match against our F-22's and perhaps even a well trained F-15 driver. If I had to guess these purchases are more to bolster the internal security more than anything. Iran is very careful to poke their heads into the snake pit.

Other than the basic airframe shape, Maverick wouldn't recognize a thing, so doubtful.

Harmon Rabb in Jag was able to steal a Flanker in one of the episodes. Maverick will probably figure out how to fly it, he is a test pilot after all, lol.
