Honestly, the classes are super easy, just incredibly boring. Most classes pitch together money to get a Coffee Maker or a Keurig to help keep you awake -- It is worth it. If you are active, make sure you retain everything. If you are reserve or national guard, most everything you will learn will be useless besides knowledge of the ARs and DA Pams. Anything you learn about EMILPO will be completely useless. I went to my unit and the only thing useful I had that was a transferred skill was how to write a memo. I was there just a few years ago and almost every test was open notes. Most of the test are about certain regulations, which you are allowed to have the regulation open during the test. Any forms you will need to fill out always have another page with them telling you exactly how to fill them out. So even if it is a form you have never seen before, instructions are with it!CTR-F Will be you best friend. Pretty much you just need to be willing to search for the answer, even if you do not know it. That is the core of the job of 42A -- Searching for an answer. Everything is way more relaxed compared to basic. In my experience, the first day we got there all of the PSGs were trying to be like Drill sergeants and scare us. Second day, they were the nicest people we ever met. Phones are allowed. DO NOT TAKE THEM TO CLASS. You are not allowed to have them during the day. But once you get released for the night and on weekends you are allowed to have them. I would not be on your phone in the hallway or anything, but in the day room and in your room do what you wish with it. Not the first weekend, but the second weekend I was there we were allowed passes on base. Fourth week we were allowed to go off base, as long as we made it back on time. Pretty much you have a lot of free reign, just do not abuse it!

Based on having served in the Reserves from 2000-2013 I’m pretty sure you get your weekends off during AIT with exceptions of course. Passes off Ft Jackson during the day possible on a weekend. I’ll let others with more current information provide answers. Cell phones I’m sure are allowed during off duty hours just don’t blow the privledges authorized! Good luck.
