I am looking at a possible medical reclass and I would like to know what is AIT like?, career progression?, anything I should learn or study before going to AIT?, would it help me get an AMEDD comission?, anything I need to know about the job?, is there a lot of places to go assignment wise?.

Thank you for replying SGT Hallock.

I did see that post but I felt like I need a little bit more elaboration on the subject. Sometimes, depending on who sees the questions a person would get different, more through answers.

I do agree that people, me included should use the search function more often.

If you're at a medical reclass, you don't get to pick your job. You put forward a list of jobs you're qualified for, HRC gives you the job they decide and have a class seat for. Pretty sure you're not qualified for 68X as an E5, but I don't have ATRRS open in front of me.

You'll get whatever job HRC has class seats for in the next 30-60 days after their reclass decision. That's most often 92Y or 88M unless you have a TS. Or it could be 68X. Be prepared to PCS within two weeks from when you receive your new MOS. You'll know your follow in assignment immediately.

Also, no matter what anyone tells you, you are TDY enroute, not TDY and return. You will need a manual DD1610, your travel gets filed at your next duty station

SGT (Join to see) most of CMF68 doesn't accept anything higher than non promotable E4. You can look in the link below, chapter 10C, it usually lists any rank requirements.

Your CC will receive your permanent profile. From that date they have two weeks to submit your MAR2. You'll be told to pick at least three jobs you qualify for. You will need to look in the smart book, and the ATRRS Course Catalog. You'll need to look at the physical requirements in chapter 10B of the smart book and make sure they match the restrictions of your permanent profile.

HRC will give you whatever they have an available class seat for that you qualify for on that specific day. It will usually be between 4-6 weeks away. Reclass branch will give you your follow on assignment within a week or two. Your new branch manager can't help you.

Unless your school is PCS length, you will go TDY enroute. If you have family you will attend the school then return to clear. The second you get your assignment you need to get your levy packet and turn it in to get your orders. Then you need to take those orders to your DTS and ask for a manual DD1610. If your family is EFMP you'll almost certainly have Korea as a follow on assignment and you will not return to clear, you'll clear and leave immediately.

When you receive your new MOS, your MOS will change immediately and you'll receive the ASI 4A Not qualified in MOS, not at fault. That will allow you to retain your promotable status. Once you graduate the 4A will be removed. If you fail, or miss your start date, or need to be rescheduled for any reason that you're at fault like being flagged, you'll receive a new MOS and training date with the ASI 4B not qualified in MOS, Soldier at fault. You will not be eligible for promotion.

There are no options concerning the MOS. You do not get to choose, your list is a wish list, so put every MOS on there you qualify for that you would like. You will almost certainly have to reenlist for the SRR for the MOS or the follow on assignment. If you decline to reenlist your MOS will be changed to 09U and you will ETS in 270 days.

Thank you for the very thorough answer.

I just took a look at the link and the ATRRS course and unfortunately for me it is only available to non promotable E-4 and below in active duty. Do you know if I can ask for a demotion so I can reclass and is it advisable?. Even if I wait for my YMAV date I wouldn't be able to reclass and being Infantry I might get promoted to E6 by then. Historically, has there ever been a rank waiver for reclassing as an E5?.

SGT (Join to see) your ymav has nothing to do with a MAR2, nor your ETS, DEROS, or whether or not you're in the reenlistment window. With a MAR2 you will be reclassed and moved immediately.

You can always contact the proponent of any MOS and ask for a grade waiver. For the 68 series the answer is almost always no unless it's for 68W.

Grade waivers are mostly useless though because the class you want will almost certainly not have any class seats at that time. When HRC picks your class they go to the pool of short fuse training seats. These are classes that start within 90 days. They are seats for MOS's nobody took because nobody wants to reenlist for them, mostly 88M, 92G, 92Y etc. The rest of them are random seats that popped up because someone didn't ship to basic and it's too late for recruiting to fill, or some dropped from basic and it's too soon for reenlistment to fill.

You won't know what those class seats will be. What I can tell you is that if your counselor pulls up all the training seats available from that date to 90 days out, you'll almost certainly get one of those.
