I just want to mark today with the RP community.
Fifteen years ago today at 1035 local time, a suicide bomber struck my convoy killing two of my Soldiers, MAJ Charles (Robert) Soltes, and LTC Mark Phelan. It also badly wounded three other Soldiers, two with life altering injuries.
I too was wounded that day, trying (with mixed success) to get my men and women out of that burning vehicle. OCT 13, 2004 is indelibly ingrained in my memory, and I want you all to take a moment, pause, and remember those good troops and what they did for our country on that day.

I am so sorry. May they rest in peace knowing you will never forget them.

It isn't the burden it once was, although I can look in the mirror and see a few things to remember the day by.
I barely knew those two men, having only met them two weeks before.
Yet I can tell you every detail of that day, as if it were yesterday.
I used to agonize over what I could have done differently, and maybe get a different result. I am at peace with that now. But I will never forget.
