GOD’S GOODNESS
If you are living in the United States, Thanksgiving is one of the best national holidays. It began as the founders of our great nation recognized the hand of God upon the nation in an unusual way. There was a sense of destiny about the forefathers that lasted to some degree up until the WWII generation. Not saying that everyone was spiritual, but there was a knowing that the hand of God was on the nation as a people. Generations since have lost that sense of national identity and purpose and have drifted far from their spiritual roots.

On Thanksgiving Day in 1735, Jonathan Edwards prepared a sermon entitled “God Amongst His People.” His church, located in Northhampton, Massachusetts, had experienced twelve months of spiritual awakening. It was the start of what has been called “the Great Awakening” that impacted and birthed “One Nation Under God.”

Edwards told his congregation that they had a lot to be thankful to God for that year. The congregation's farms were blessed; there were peace and safety; it had been a very good year for all of them. He continued to tell his congregation that their greatest blessing was Thanksgiving, and it was that God had come down amongst His people. Read below in Edward’s own words.

”This is the greatest glory and honor for a people to have so great and holy a God in the midst of them. God thereby puts the greatest possible honor upon a people. How can a people be more highly dignified that by having so great and glorious being dwelling with them? This renders a people excellent above all other things. That people that have this great and Holy One in the midst of them, they partake of His Glory. His Glory is in a measure reflected from them: they shine with somewhat of the Glory of God on them.” - Jonathan Edwards, Thanksgiving Day 1735

Our nation had the greatest gift possible, God’s anointing on His people. This Thanksgiving, we too have a lot to be thankful for, God’s anointing is on us as it was on them and for that we are thankful.

“indeed it came to pass, when the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord, and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying: “For He is good, For His mercy endures forever,” that the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud,” (2 Chronicles 5:13)

God is good; everything about Him is perfect. He shows us this goodness every day; this is what we call His presence. As Solomon and the priests worshipped the Lord at the dedication of the temple, it was God’s goodness that was so noticeable. As they sang the Psalm of David, the Glory of God’s presence filled the temple. It was so thick that they could not stand up. In Kings, it says they were not even able to enter the building. God’s goodness was overwhelming the atmosphere. Have you ever felt the goodness of God? There is nothing in this world that comes anywhere close to this love.

What an awesome picture of God’s goodness; the sun can only give light, God can only radiate goodness. After all, it is God’s goodness and kindness that leads us to repentance.

This Thanksgiving, remember that you have the anointing of God on you. Look for opportunities to share the Gospel with your family members, friends, and even people that you do not know who do not have a relationship with God. The best gift you can give them is the goodness of God on their life, and for that, we all have a lot to be thankful.

Will you let God’s Goodness flow in your life today?
Do you need Prayer? We are here to pray with you.
“Heavenly Father, I am forever thankful for Thanksgiving Day and what it means. Your blessings have been here from the beginning, and Your blessings are for us today. I thank You for Your goodness and the light of Your Holy Spirit. Your anointing in my life will bring the light of Your blessings to others as I radiate Your goodness to others. It is Your goodness and kindness that leads us to repentance. Thank You, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

One of the readings in my American Literature text when I was a high school junior was Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." It's been a long time since I read it, but it is pure Fire and Brimstone!

I concur LTC Moser ~
When Jonathan Edwards preached this message he did so in a monotone but no one fell asleep, rather they were moved to repentance as you know and it remains one of the greatest sermons of all time.
Many years ago I preached a message which allowed for segments of Edwards message to be used (Giving him appropriate credit, of course) and our congregation was so moved that the altar was too crowded for everyone to get there. It took some time for folks to finish their prayers and even the young adults were praying.
This was not my message or any of my doing. It was the work of the Holy Spirit reaching out to them and moving their hearts closer to the Lord.

I am reminded of this scripture each time I am made aware of that message:
Isa. 55:11
"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it."

May all praise and glory be unto the Lord and I thank you for posting this response tonight.
