In 2026, #AmericasWalkingClub will be celebrating the 50th year of volkssporting in the United States.
What is volkssporting you ask?? Well, mostly, it's walking - with a group or on your own, on a route that's been thoughtfully planned in advance for your safety as well as scenic and cultural enjoyment. These events are organized under the guidance of the American Volkssport Association (or AVA) - DBA "America's Walking Club."
AVA is one of 30 member Nations and 42 countries overall in the International Federation of Popular Sports, or IVV. Our purpose (and motto): Fun, Fitness & Friendship!
Stay tuned for more posts in 2026 - with regional events planned for every month starting in Boulder City, NV from 9--11 JAN!

Oh, boy oh boy, did this bring back memories! I must have done fifty (maybe even more!) "Volksmarches" when I was stationed in Germany. Over there, they were generally a walk from one village to another. It was Germany so when you got to the Village at the end of the walk, you got a medal, and they had Beer, and Sausages. And both of those are with Capital letters in German culture. LOL I don't drink, but boy did I love the sausages. And then you just took a bus back to where you started. I did not know America had anything similar. I walk alone - or with Kathy and my daughters. But sadly, my bones can't take long walks anymore...but I don't care...I still walk. Just not as far
Loved this post! Get out there and MOVE!

We went on multiple marches over the weekends in Germany. Did a few in France as well.

@john mcclellan I have never heard this term or known about this event, however, I have been a speed walker for many years.

Wow!! OK, well this kind of walking is non-competitive, and started in Europe in the early-mid 1960s after the war. Many of us who served in Germany were introduced to these walks there, and I find that many don't realize that there are walking clubs here in the USA that are part of this sport. Events also include cycling, swimming, x-country skiing or snowshoeing... most anything where you move your whole body under your own power.

COL (Join to see) - I didn't read this until I posted my thoughts. Yep, Germany is where I started those kinds of walks. Loved them! I only did parts of the Camino de Santiago, but my brother, sister, and niece have done the whole 500 miles! And I walked 13 miles a day (which was their average for 43 days) while they were doing the Camino. I called my five hundred miles: "The Camino de Wilmington. " LOL
