Okay, this just happened. And man the 21st Century just upped and whomped me in the choppers. Our house is just a few years old. We were told that there were fancy light bulbs that would last ten years, or at least 15,000 hours. I thought that was good marketing. I knew they had like LED lights and those other energy efficient bulbs. But, come on, 10 years,15,000 hours. Sounds like Marketing got carried away.
So our light over our dining room table, which happens to be where I read most times too, was flickering. So I get out the step stool, take off the fogged cover...and just stared. no bulb. Just a glass bowl with a motherboard under it.
The one you see in the picture.
Turns out, one of the "chips" is faulty. You have to turn the power off, take the entire unit out, and have an electrician put in the new one. You can do it yourself, if you have those skills.
When I called Lowe's the Electrician assured me that they do indeed last for 10 years, or more, or 15,000 hours. In fact, I get my replacement for free, because it was under warranty. They will be here on Tuesday to fit a new "computer" into my ceiling. WTF?
What happened to screwing in a lightbulb? What are we going to do with all those old jokes? My grandkids will never have to replace a bulb. They are actually designed to last for 50,000 hours...or more! And they use way less energy.
Man, oh man, you can tell I am from a different century. I can't even change a bulb. And they don't have them anymore. LOL

I know, but I feel kind of left behind. I don't have the skills for this new world. But it fascinates me beyond belief. If we don't end up being our own worse enemies, I wonder what life will be like in the second half of this century!

SGT Kevin Hughes I can understand that. Maybe I'll put up a post on what I think the second half of the 21st Century will look like. I have ideas.

The Fat Electrician in YouTube brought up this issue. Apparently "planned obsolescence" is and has been a thing for awhile now. It's absolutely stupid, and is giving me a lot of reason to find and acquire appliances from no later than my early childhood because that's about the last time stuff was made to, ideally, outlive you.
