More from: "Out of the Mouth of Seniors:"
I just finished reading a book. In that book, one of the Characters was relating a story from his youth. And he said:
"It was only a moment, but it lasted forever."
That made my old mind do, what old minds do...act like a Time Machine.
I went back to two very very brief memories. One of my Kathy, and one with my first Real Girlfriend.
So the Picture is of me and Kathy at age 18. Mine in uniform. Hers in PJ's at Junior College. I didn't know her back then. The Universe had not brought us together yet. The Memory that came back was of the two of us, just doing dishes together in the Kitchen of my small apartment.
I washed. She dried. We looked like a well oiled machine. And each time I handed her a plate, her fingers would touch mine for a split second. We would let that touch linger for a second, both of us making eye contact and smiling.
That was the first memory that popped into my head. Just a Moment in Time, when we were young.
The other memory came from my first Girl. I was a Senior in HS. She was a Sophomore. By that time we had been together for three years. She was asleep on the Couch, when her Mom let me in through the Kitchen door.
"Quiet...she is sleeping."
She whispered to me with a smile.
I went over to the couch very quietly, and then reached around her for a hug. She was lying on her back. She never woke up, she just reached out with both arms, pulled me close and stayed asleep.
I realized in that moment, how much she trusted me. Sound asleep, and somehow...she knew it was me. Never even woke up. Her Mom told me a few weeks later that she thought it was one of the sweetest things she ever saw.
So there you go. Both incidents took mere moments to have an effect so strong the memories never left.
Funny how I can go to those memories so easily, and can't find my glasses I was just wearing. Being old...is wonderfully different for Time and Memories.
