We have had a wonderful thread going about researching the Science of dreams. All of us "Googled" for new information. And that made me thing back to the research engine I used in Grade School and High School...AND college. The Card Catalog. Dewey Decimal System.
Those little pencil nubs in a cardboard box on top of the cabinet, with tiny hand ripped scraps of paper to jot down the number and stack location. Then you had to go find the book...hope it was in, and not on hold.
And if you had to look up a series of books or magazines...there goes your Saturday night.

Do you remember the Weekly Readers? SRA (Loved those stories) I love language but typos ad infinitum.

The card catalogs were a great place to check out girls and vice versa. I can plead guilty to several dates that started out from card catalog encounters.

I never seemed to ever find what I was looking for in those books and just went to the section that interested me.

And that may be the best use of the Card Catalog I have ever heard.
