Good morning, Rallypoint, and welcome to the January 13, 2026 video edition of Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). Note: the video is an MP4 file...so your mileage may vary (YMMV) depending on the browser you use to view it.
This 3 second video clip captures an eruption from the surface of our Sun in late 2024. The data comes from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The brighter yellows indicate the hotter plasma (> 1 million degrees centigrade); the reds and darker shades indicate cooler and denser material. You can clearly see how quickly the Sun's magentic fields re-orient after the eruption occurs.

Maj William W. 'Bill' Price this is fascinating stuff and scary. I am not be religious to you, but in my mind how is it hard to believe there is more than us and that we truly do not control anything.
I hope you have more eruption videos. Have a good day.

Maj William W. 'Bill' Price oh my, I did enjoy the video. It was fascinating, horrible, magnificent, and beautiful. I saved it in my YouTube library and shared it to my son, the science fanatic.

My tiny brain cannot even comprehend what a million degrees centigrade is...and what kind of materials can exist in that kind of heat. Just like I can't comprehend that the photon that left to sun eight minutes or so ago, already knew it was going to hit my eye, after taking ten million years to get to the surface of the sun. Surface...yeah, try and find that on the sun. LOL

The Sun ain't playing around. When you can fit a whole bunch of Earths in the area of a corona mass eruption, it's amazing.
