9 April 1865: Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Va.
ILLUSTRATIONS: (1) Fitzhugh Lee's charging cavalry unleashes the last rebel yell of the war near Appomattox Court House early on the morning of the Confederate surrender. (2) Grant chats with James Longstreet while awaiting Lee's arrival for the surrender ceremony. (3) General Lee and Lt. Col. Charles Marshall arrive at the McLean home for the surrender signing. (4) Generals Grant and Lee discuss surrender terms. (5) General Lee signs the surrender document as Lt. Col. Charles Marshall, General Grant, and several of Grant's subordinate commanders look on. (6) Generals Lee and Grant shake hands after the surrender signing. (7) A warriors' tribute as the Confederates depart from Appomattox. (8) Grant and his generals go for a celebratory ride after the rebels leave Appomattox.

Finally the end to a terrible war, but I'm glad that the North ( Union Army ) won. I have visited the Custis-Lee Mansion a few times, and what a beautiful view from there.

The war was brutal and the conditions were deadlier. The surrender of General Robert Lee to Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant brought an end to the Civil War.
