Lt Col Charlie Brown, I have a question. I suffer from PTSD however I had mine long before I was ever in the service. The fight or flight, the hyper sensitivity, the always watching over my shoulder. I know that this is going to sound weird, but now it's almost like a warm blanket, it's the reason I live alone, only go out to check my mail, have black out drapes. I from time to time go out for a cookout. How do I get past the "yeah but" in my head ever time someone gives me a complement? Any way I have lived like this for over 56 years.

Scott, that "yeah but" on compliments is not all that unusual. It's just that some people are better at kicking the internal critic to the curb than others are.

The bigger issue is the PTSD. It feels like it is keeping you safe. It is, but it is also smothering your life. Please get help!

Lt Col Charlie Brown I am seeing a shrink, until I wrote the first comment, I had never been able to say what I was feeling. I have a kinda a Catch 22. I take a narcotic pain medication and because the VA's new perscription mandate the meds I was taking to help me sleep, he can no longer give me. The meds for anxiety are a joke. I am involved with COL Mikel J. Burroughs Sunday night gathering. Have a great Sunday.

Lt Col Charlie Brown my biggest problem is that from 7 years old my coping skills and understanding my feeling are wrong, there is one I remember when I was about 10, my mom and I were standing in the garage watching a sever storm pass over our home, hail stone the size of tennis balls are pretty much smashing every thing, I was told not to be afraid, yet I could see her fear. Many people and years later I was taking a CEU for my certification as an Alcohol and Drug abuse councilor that I made a discovery that has been a kinda life saver. Growing up we are curious and inquisitive about the world around us. Going through the terrible twos, and can tax anyone. So when someone is cooking, we tell the child"Don't touch that it's hot" yet the minute her back is turned we are back trying to touch it. I finally found out that, my whole under standing of feelings was skewed. The child will continue until they get burned. Why? Because they have no reference feeling for hot. They may know the word but no reference. I grew up in the 50's-60's, their was no affection shown in our house, and I was always conflicted with things I saw in the parents of other families. Anyway I am finding a way to help me with the group with COL Mikel J. Burroughs on Sunday night and hope to meet you there someday.
